Spiritual wellness day focuses on creating harmony
Secretary of SAMWU, Phila Madwe said the purpose of the event was for them as workers to reunite.
Ugu District Municipality held a spiritual wellness day at the Port Shepstone Civic Centre recently, and invited bishops and reverends to pray for councillors and officials.
Acting municipal manager, Vela Mazibuko said the prayer was held because of various incidents including the sudden deaths of the mayor, Phumlile Mthiyane and the municipal manager, Dr Elliot Ntombela.
“The purpose is to create harmony, and for us to unite with the previously dismissed employees who have been reinstated.”
Acting mayor, Mandla Chiya said Ugu is the first municipality that has experienced the deaths of heads of administration a few days apart.
“I think we were traumatised by the deaths of Ntombela and Mthiyane, especially as it happened so close together.”
The mayor said they needed the day so that they could also integrate with the reinstated workers, to be able to work together in peace and be able to deliver services to the people of Ugu.

He said there have been divisions in the groups. “We have spoken a lot with the previously dismissed workers, we told them that they are back at work, to work.”
Furthermore, he said the reason for problems is due to people speaking without facts and pointing fingers at each other.
“The municipality had failed and that was the main reason why we were fighting, there were no personal issues.”
He said it seems that the municipality is moving in the right direction.”As much as we are moving in the right direction, no one should get comfortable and neglect their responsibility. We should stop running after each other, but rather run after service delivery, to be delivered to the people.”
Spiritual leaders, Bishop Innocent Doyisa, Rev Lindiwe Shozi, Bishop Vusi Mlambo and Rev France Mnyandu led the service.
The all-day service saw officials and councillors worshipping and listening to the word of God.
