The coast’s legendary snake catcher, Sarel van de Merwe has done it again – saving lives and rescuing dangerous snakes.
This time he raced out to to help residents of Bhoboyi who had a mamba lurking in their house.
Unbeknown to Sarel a very, very large black mamba had ventured into the house and had hid behind a fridge.
After searching the home, he found the mamba seeking warmth in the motor compartment of the fridge.
Disgruntled that her plans to make home in the fridge were disrupted, the mamba fled under a couch.
So after a small ‘wild goose chase’ Sarel managed to nab it.
Sarel said the mamba wasn’t his biggest catch to date, but certainly one of the strongest ones to handle.
An interesting fact is that black mambas mate during winter – and are probably, hands down, the most dangerous snake around.
Sarel jokingly says that he knows whether the snake is a male or female, if it opts towards his wallet or his beer.
“I’ve also had a case if there is no money in my wallet, she will head towards the beer,” he laughed.
