Diver bitten by shark off Wild Coast is recovering in hospital
NSRI and local authorities are appealing to bathers in the area to be cautious.
A man, believed to be aged 40, was bitten by a shark while free diving at Mdumbi, Transkei yesterday afternoon.
The diver and his family are friends with local residents, the Lawlor family, who frequently go on holiday at the same location where the shark bite occurred.
Bruce Sandman, NSRI Headquarters Operations Manager, said the NSRI Mdumbi lifeguards and NSRI Headquarters lifeguard instructors, who were in the area conducting lifeguard training, responded.
On arrival on the scene it was found that the diver had sustained lacerations from a shark bite and was in a stable condition. He was transported privately to a local medical clinic where he was attended to by a doctor.
NSRI EOC (Emergency Operations Centre), an NSRI Headquarters Operations duty controller, NSRI East London duty controllers and NSRI Eastern Cape regional duty controllers alerted the EC Government Health EMS who dispatched an EMS helicopter, Mercy Wing 9.
The man, in a stable condition, was then airlifted to hospital in the care of EMS paramedics for further medical care. He is believed to be recovering. NSRI and local authorities are appealing to bathers in the area to be cautious.
