Tyne’s time to shine in ocean sports
Cruz Rivetti, Tyne Van Achterbergh and Nathan Jones have been selected to represent KZN at the SA Inter Provincial Surf Lifesaving Champs soon.
Tyne van Achterbergh, a proud member of the Scottburgh Surf Lifesaving Club, has been in the limelight during the past season, with outstanding achievements in various ocean sporting events.
At the 2023 SA Surf Lifesaving Champs held in Gqeberha, he was awarded the top U17 male competitor. He, together with his teammate Nathan Jones and Scottburgh Nippers Cruz Rivetti, were selected to represent KZN at the SA Inter Provincial Surf Lifesaving Champs which will be held in Durban this Saturday (27th).
Recently, Tyne competed in the 25 Piers Swimming event at North Beach in Durban. This event sees participants swim around the North Beach Pier 25 times – once every seven minutes!
Tyne won the event with a time of 1:19:30 – more than three minutes faster than second place swimmer, and last year’s winner, Damien Angle from Umhlanga Rocks.
In another ocean event, Tyne finished third in the Dolphin Mile Swim competing in the 13 to 30 age group – an excellent achievement bearing in mind that he is only 16 years old.
He also won a silver and a bronze medal in a paddling event – the 500m and 1000m U16 K2 KZN Sprints event.
In March, Tyne won the junior section of the Ocean Heroes competition in four disciplines: a 2km swim, a 6km paddle, a 5km run and a 4km kneeboard.
Tyne has now been selected to be part of SA Surf Lifesaving High Performance Squad which is an incredible achievement, he richly deserves.
It seems as though, it is definitely Tyne’s season to shine.
