Celebrate World Oceans Day in Scottburgh
The aim is to engage with communities, educate about the importance of conservation, and inspire people to take action to protect the world's oceans.
The quaint little town of Scottburgh is one of the participating locations for this year’s Ocean Festival from June 5-11.
Organised to celebrate World Oceans Day on Thursday, June 8 themed Planet Ocean: Tides are Changing, the Ocean Festival includes a series of global events that aim to engage with communities, educate about the importance of conservation, and inspire people to take action to protect the world’s oceans.
“We are super excited to be organising some positive events in celebration of World Oceans Day, with our goal to encourage as many people as possible to acknowledge and understand the importance of the oceans,” explained Russel Symcox, the Oceans Festival founder.
“There’s a lot of amazing work already being done in ocean conservation, but we all have a role to play. Through the Ocean Festival, we hope to ignite a collective movement that preserves this life-giving force.”
Locals in Scottburgh and surrounding areas can expect a variety of outdoor engaging activities and events for all ages to come. The aim of this is to celebrate the human connection with the ocean, and raise awareness about the importance of its health and protection.
On World Oceans Day (June 8), there will be a beach clean-up at Scottburgh main beach from 14:00 to 16:00 and a Mahlongwa River clean-up from 16:30 to 17:30.
On June 9, there’s an Ocean Festival conservation talks at Cutty Sark Hotel from 12:30 to 14:00 and an MTB ride from Cutty Sark Hotel/Renishaw Trails from 14:30 to 16:30.
The Cutty Sark Pro Surf Contest at Scottburgh beach is on June 10 from 07:30 to 16:00 and a beach clean-up run/walk at Scottburgh main beach from 10:00 to 12:00. There will also be an Ocean Festival event at Cutty Sark from 17:00.
Lastly on June 11 there is once again the Cutty Sark Pro Surf Contest at Scottburgh beach from 07:30 to 16:00 and the Leatherback Surfski Challenge at Scottburgh beach and Aliwal Shoal from 08:00 to 13:00.
