Differing responses to Ugu’s 2023/24 budget
The DA said it does not approve the Ugu budget because it is unfunded.
Ugu District’s acting mayor, Mandla Chiya presented his budget speech at a council meeting recently.
The budget is for the 2023/24 financial year.
In presenting the revised budget, Chiya tabled a total budget of about R1.6 billion with an allocation of about R1.3 billion for the operational budget and a capital budget allocation of more than R399 million.
According to Chiya this adjustment budget is seeking to strike a balance between on-going service delivery imperatives of water and sanitation services, while also responding to the challenges of ageing municipal infrastructure throughout the district.
The Democratic Alliance said it did not approve the budget as it is unsure if it will be funded or not.
Speaker Sizwe Ngcobo said by final budget approval, Ugu will know whether it’s funded or not.
DA councillor, George Henderson said they need to know whether it will be funded or not, otherwise they will not approve it.
He also said that the budget does not focus on the core functions of Ugu, which is water and sanitation.
The IFP also said it did not approve, however at final budgeting if it is not funded then they will not approve it either.
