Concerns over sewage overflow in two rivers
Ugu District Municipality said it is safe to drink tap water.
A video of raw sewage flowing into a river in Harding has been circulated on social media.
The sewage is flowing from a pump station in Harding into the Umzimkhulwana River, and then into Mzimkhulu River.
In the video, Harding farmer Bertie Strydom says the overflow has been reported a number of times, but no one has responded to it.
Also in the video, the water in the river is green.
Sean Lange who is also in the video, said the ‘green water’ flows in the Mzimkhulu River to the St Helen’s Rock pump station.
In a statement released by Ugu District Municipality a week ago, they said they are aware of the problem and that the municipality had assembled a team of technical experts and environmentalists to conduct a full investigation, to determine the veracity of these allegations.
According to the statement, testing and sampling of bacteriological and chemical variables at various points are ongoing.
According to Ugu the results of turbidity tests showed compliance and acceptable drinking water quality standards last Thursday. Testing was done upstream and downstream of the Umzimkhulwana River which is the abstraction source of the Kwanyuswa 2 water treatment works.
