Regional hospital celebrates birth of nursing pioneer
Nurses were advised to accept being led in order to lead one day and join healthy and constructive groups.
Port Shepstone Regional Hospital held its International Nurses Day celebration at the Port Shepstone Civic Centre recently.
It was attended by district management, the hospital’s CEO, Exco members, extended management and supervisors, organised labour, retired nurses, the Port Shepstone campus principal and management, and nursing staff from different disciplines.
The hospital’s spokesperson, Phumza Morai said Nurses Day is important because it is the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of the nursing profession, also known as ‘The Lady with the lamp’.
Mandisa Maqutu, Deputy Nursing Manager said the theme for 2023 is ‘Our Nurses. Our Future’.
“We need to learn from the lessons of the Covid-19 pandemic and translate these into actions for the future that ensure nurses are protected, respected and valued,” she added
Her advice to young nurses was that they must grab the opportunity, respect and accept criticism from their leadership.
The nurses were also advised to accept being led in order to lead one day and join healthy and constructive groups.
Murchison Hospital CEO and retired nurse, Buyisile Ngesi gave a powerful keynote address, cautioning nurses on the importance of self-care.
She highlighted that if nurses are not emotionally and psychologically happy, they will find it difficult to serve their patients.
Maqutu also extended her gratitude and appreciation to all the nurses of Port Shepstone Hospital and the nursing campus for the good work, commitment and dedication, despite difficult times.
