Deaf educator inspires everyone she meets

The local woman believes being deaf does not mean that you cannot achieve the same as hearing people.

Kubashnee Perumal of Sea Park believes being deaf does not mean that you cannot achieve the same as hearing people.
She is currently one of two finalists in the disability category in the Lotus FM Women of Substance Awards (WOSA).

As an educator at St Martin de Porres School in Port Shepstone for the past 21 years, she has been lauded for her achievements and dedication to community upliftment, particularly within the deaf community.

She has also been recently acknowledged in ‘The Unsung Heroes of KwaZulu-Natal’, a book which pays tribute to over 40 people who have made an invaluable contribution to society.

Kubashnee studied hard, completed matric, furthered her studies by completing a National Professional Diploma in Education at Unisa in 2001 and an Advanced Diploma in Education at the University of Witwatersrand in 2005.
She further enrolled in modelling to gain more confidence, entered modelling competitions and won Miss Deaf KZN in 2001.

She worked hard to prove herself, as well as work alongside hearing teachers on an equal footing, ventured out by travelling to all corners of South Africa and eventually touring Dubai, Turkey, Poland, Ireland and Kenya.

Kubashnee is the ambassador for KwaZulu-Natal Blind and Deaf Society and the Talk Sign Campaign KZN.
She has also been a guest at a number of local school assemblies spreading the awareness of Sign Language as a language. She also hosts South African Sign Language awareness classes for the public and organisations such as the Saps, municipalities and banks.

“I love to do volunteer work and make a difference where I can. Every day, I learn how to be a proud community based woman activist and give inspirational talks that are held along the South Coast and fundraises for the deaf,” she said.

She is currently raising funds for a trip to Poland for five educators at her school who want to go on an educational tour to learn more about how deaf and intellectually challenged learners progress.

To vote for Kubashnee in the WOSA competition SMS the word WOSA followed by number code *5* (WOSA 5) to 33192. Voting lines close on August 27 at midnight. Smses are charged at R1.50. You may enter as many times as you like.
