Singers set record in Margate
The beach amphitheatre and surrounding lawn area was packed with hundreds of people.
A record-setting 180 songs were sung by 42 singers over exactly 12 hours during the Mardi Gras held on Margate beachfront recently.
The Amateur Karaoke Association’s (AKA) original event was set for Monday, September 25 (public holiday) but was cancelled due to bad weather and was moved to October 4. Founder of AKA, Gerrie Odendaal said it was for this reason, as to why the original 66 singers were reduced to 42.

AKA currently has about 80 members and hosts many different fun events.
“Well done to them as we claimed a South Coast record (even maybe a South African record) for the most singers singing an amazing 180 songs, uninterrupted over 12 hours on one stage!,” he said.
“Our group of singers was well-supported by 12 semi-professional singers and later joined and complemented with a couple of local professionals.”
The beach’s amphitheatre and surrounding lawn area was packed with hundreds of people who enjoyed, sang along and supported the record effort right through the 12 hours of the event.
Each and every singer will be rewarded with a lovely certificate to inspire them for future events.
Odendaal said this marathon effort was undisputedly a huge success and a much-needed injection for the Mardi Grass event with even the weather playing along while the visitors could browse and shop and later sat back and enjoy the music.
AKA is going to repeat this event but definitely aiming to go even bigger and this could be achieved on a proper public holiday in December.
The association invites all and every music lover to join them. Contact 083 5392699.
