The 1st Margate Scouts Group hosted a JOTA/JOTI camp in Uvongo recently, where Scouts, Cubs, and Meerkats could learn about communications technologies.
JOTA stands for Jamboree on the Air, JOTI for Jamboree on the Internet.
Scouts from 1st Margate and 1st Port Shepstone groups had loads of fun at the camp, taking part in activities like ‘big battleships’, ‘Lego instruction via 2-way radios’ and charades.
The Cubs enjoyed learning the phonetic alphabet and exploring secret codes.
The highlight of the camp was to use ham radios and laptops to make contact with Scouts, Cubs, and Meerkats from all over the world.
Contact was made with Scouts in countries like France, Germany, Italy, England, Wales, Ireland, Thailand, Japan and Indonesia.
Although they had a busy weekend taking part in the world’s largest digital Scout event, they still made time to support the Springboks in their Rugby World Cup semi-final match against England.
1st Margate Scouts Group would like to extend a sincere thank you to the Amateur Radio Club for setting up the ham radios and assisting the scouts and also to their Scouts Group Leader, Carl Eva, for organising the event.
