Ugu libraries launch holiday programme

Part of the program was to launch gaming at libraries.

Holidays are here!
To celebrate, younger children and teenagers were invited to attend the launch of exciting holiday programmes rolled out at libraries across the Ugu district.

The launch was held at the Port Shepstone library last Friday.
For the younger children, the programme started with a visit from Barney.

Thereafter ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ arrived, and a puppet show kept the children glued to their seats.
Senior librarian Susan Roos said a police member from the South African Police Service spoke to the children on ‘stranger danger’.

The children were educated about the importance of not speaking to strangers and also not getting into vehicles with strangers. All children then received whistles to use should they be in danger.

Afterwards, the children were divided in two groups – one group went to the activities room where they played a variety of board games. The balance of the children enjoyed painting with their fingers.

Part of the programme was to launch gaming at libraries for teenagers.
All libraries have computers and some have other gaming equipment like Playstation 5 (Gamalakhe), and X-boxes at various libraries.

Roos said, unfortunately due to loadshedding the gaming could not take place as planned, but once power was restored, the gaming began. “The teenagers played until the library closed. This was very successful,” she said.
Librarians invite everyone to attend their holiday programmes and also during the year bring children for assistance with school projects. Most importantly, parents should
teach their children to be lifelong learners of reading, and let their children become library users.
