Taxi drivers in court, shut down in Margate

Areas affected by the shutdown are KwaNzimakwe, Gcilima, Nositha and Port Edward.

Twenty six taxi drivers from Bambanani Taxi Association were arrested in Margate last Friday, and are appearing in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court this morning.

Taxi violence started in Margate last Monday and has affected passengers, leaving many stranded.

Taxis also blocked roads to Margate last Friday.

The chairperson of the Bambanani Taxi Association, Martin Ngcungama said the drivers are furious and have decided to shut down Margate this morning.

Areas affected by the shutdown are KwaNzimakwe, Gcilima, Nositha and Port Edward.

While Bambanani was not operating last weekend, however, it was business as usual for Gamalakhe Taxi Association in Margate.

The chairperson of Gamalakhe Taxi Association, Muziwenhlanhla Gutshwa said they have been operating, and they are working just fine.

According to sources, a meeting will be held with the police this morning, to try and resolve the matter.

Some schools have been reported closed in Margate and surrounding areas.
