Top award for Ugu’s disaster management centre
The municipality’s disaster management centre has been placed at the helm of KZN for providing outstanding service delivery through its many efforts when aiding disaster victims.

For responding positively to disasters, Ugu District Municipality received an award at the Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs’ (Cogta) annual Municipal Excellence Awards held in Pietermaritzburg recently.
The mayor Sikhumbuzo ‘Zero’ Mqadi said the award does not only reaffirm commitment towards coordination of disaster management activities in the district, but also serves as a testimony as a people’s municipality.
“The municipality’s disaster management centre has been placed at the forefront of KZN for providing outstanding service delivery through its many efforts while aiding disaster victims.”
The team comprising of officials from the disaster management centre, firefighters, Saps members, law enforcement agencies and private security services, work tirelessly during emergency situations.
In a statement, Ugu said officials who risked their lives to aid victims were bestowed with an accolade and certificate for being the best municipality to respond positively to disasters.
The accolade was received by the acting municipal manager, Vela Mazibuko.
Cogta MEC Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi said the awards aim to motivate municipalities to enhance their performance, productivity and innovation in service provision, while promoting best practices.
Other municipalities in the district, Umuziwabantu and Ray Nkonyeni also received awards for sustained financial management, best IDP performance and a clean audit.
