MARGATE UPDATE: Steady progress as town copes with flood aftermath

There has been a remarkable response as locals look to bounce back after the flooding.

Ward 2 Councillor Alan Bosch has provided an update on the progress being made with regards the current situation in Margate, which was hit by a flash flood on Sunday night.

ROADS
* Traffic still being diverted from Marine Drive past Audi and VW in Manaba.
* Intersection at Sasol: Traffic able to be routed from and to Margate central.
* A lot of traffic on Bank Street as it is an alternate route north.

CENTRAL

Central Margate is clear at present.
* Beware of sinkhole on Ridge Road.
* Hunters stream road being repaired. Could take some time still.

BEACH
* Good progress is being made to restore the beach area to an operational state again.

* Nkhongweni River (Margate lagoon) has had many wash aways and adjacent buildings and businesses have been severely impacted.

* The pump station (near Doxa building) is still inaccessible due to road damage. It appears that the pumping equipment will need to be replaced. Department of Transport and the joint ops centre are addressing the issue from today. Timing not known as yet.

* Ray Nkonyeni Municipality is busy compiling a report to submit to province for disaster management assessment.

* Water is still a problem throughout Margate and Bosch said they have had reports that the 2A and 9A reservoirs are empty. A burst 300m pipe plus damages to the feedpipe from Manaba are the reasons there is no supply.
