Gloves on for pupils, parents and scouts

More than 40 bags of trash were collected in less than two hours.

South Coasters pulled on their gloves and cleaned the beach near the Mzimkhulu River ahead of Earth Day, which was celebrated on Monday this week.

Dee Dickens from Rotary Port Shepstone said the beach was filthy near the river.

“But, thanks to so many hands, 43 bags of rubbish were removed,” she said.

The hard-working team comprised of learners from Port Shepstone Secondary and Port Shepstone High and some of their parents. A group from First Port Shepstone Scouts and their masters and a member from Port Shepstone Search and Rescue Saps also joined in.

The next beach clean-up is at the Rotary clubhouse in Umtentweni on Saturday, May 18. Help to remove alien invasive plants at Bendigo Nature Reserve from 08:00 to 11:00, and then join for beach clean up at Tweni Rotary Clubhouse from 15:00 to 17:00. Contact Dickens on 071 8662129.
