MECs follow up on projects in Ugu

At a community meeting in Oshabeni on Tuesday last week, the KZN MEC for Finance, Peggy Nkonyeni, said she is happy with how government departments are spending their budgets in the Ugu District.

She addressed the community with regard to ongoing projects.

However, Nkonyeni has noticed that the roads need more attention, especially the one to Oshabeni, all the way inland.

“We have budgeted R150 billion for KZN during this current financial year, so we have to go around to ascertain if the money is being spent wisely and that projects are on track.”

Speaking to the media, Nkonyeni said some of these projects comprise schools, creches and sports grounds.

Nkonyeni said the focus is on education and that students register at TVET colleges to gain the necessary skills.

“If you go to a TVET college, you will study and get skills, and when you are finished, you can start your own business instead of waiting to be hired.

“If rural areas had their own community educational centres, it would be easy for learners to finish school to get to these colleges.”

The MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works, Sipho ‘KK’ Nkosi, said the visit also entailed an assessment of phase two of an RDP housing project and that these houses were handed over to the rightful owners.

“Phase two cost over R40 million, however looking around, it seems like this community still needs more housing.”

He said phase three will be implemented soon.
