Discovery of human skull in bag leads Port Shepstone detectives to murderer

Investigations by detectives led them to a man who witnesses saw carrying a bag containing the skull.

Nhlanhla William Hlophe (38) was recently sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for murder, in the Port Shepstone Regional Court.

On May 3, 2021, Port Shepstone police were called out to a scene in Betania where a human skull was found.

An inquest was initially opened for investigation, but was later changed to a murder case after the post-mortem revealed blunt force trauma to be the cause of death.

Investigations by detectives led them to a man who witnesses saw carrying the bag containing the skull.

Hlophe was arrested by police on November 23, 2021.

The investigating officer in the case was Lieutenant Colonel Amos Sikhosana of Port Shepstone Detective Service.

Hlophe pointed out to police where they could find the rest of the body, a woman.

After several court appearances he was sentenced on May 23.

He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
