Federation provides aid after tornado
The Port Shepstone Hindu Cultural Federation records its unconditional thanks and appreciation to all its communities.
The Port Shepstone Hindu Cultural Federation coordinated a relief effort among all its affiliates to assist those affected by the tornado that caused much devastation in Tongaat and surrounding areas last week.
A plea was put out for non-perishable food items, as well as blankets, bedding, toiletries and clothing. Various South Coast temples used their places of worship and cultural centres as collection points.
The response was overwhelming, and the communities truly displayed the oneness of humanity.
The chairperson of the Port Shepstone Hindu Cultural Federation, DD Naidoo, said: “We can bear testament to the limitless spirit of generosity within our community. Last Friday, we delivered a truckload of items to Tongaat with the condition that such aid must go to the most affected and must be delivered with haste. The relief was received with much gratitude and indebtedness to our community. We are currently exploring the option of financial donations as we have been approached to facilitate the same. This will assist those with no insurance cover to rebuild their homes.”
He added that many organisations are providing meals to those who are displaced and accommodated in community halls.
“They are providing three meals a day for a thousand people. We have probably, through social media and other platforms, seen pictures of the aftermath of the tornado. It is only when you are on-site that reality stirs up those emotions in you. It is such a heartbreaking picture that brings to the fore the power of nature. We can only pray and hope that through human resilience those affected will overcome this tragedy, which included loss of life, and that such disasters should not be visited upon the human race,” he said.
The federation records its unconditional thanks and appreciation to all our communities for their contributions and to all those who assisted in the transportation of the relief.
