UPDATE: No injuries at Umkomaas’s Saiccor mill fire

A fire and subsequent explosion occurred on a supplier truck delivering liquid oxygen to the mill.

No one was injured or hurt in the fire that occurred at Umkomaas’s Sappi Saiccor Mill yesterday (July 17) afternoon.

The mill has since provided clarity on the incident, saying that a fire and subsequent explosion occurred on a supplier truck delivering liquid oxygen (used for bleaching) to the mill.

“The onsite firefighting team of the Saiccor Mill responded immediately, assisted shortly thereafter by Durban Metro Fire and Emergency services,” said Zelda Schwalbach (Sappi external communications).

“The fire was rapidly brought under control and ultimately extinguished. All personnel and onsite contractors were evacuated to safety and there have been no injuries.”

Sappi Southern Africa would also like to assure the members of the surrounding community that there is no danger with regards to any fumes from the liquid oxygen content from the incident.

“We express our sincere gratitude to the members of the Metro Services and our in-house teams for containing the fire rapidly and safely.”
