Ugu Municipality warns residents not to drink tap water

The municipality is working to resolve the issue promptly to ensure the water quality meets the required standards.

Ugu District Municipality released a statement yesterday (Wednesday) warning residents not to drink tap water.

The areas affected are from Southbroom to Port Edward and the inland regions of Izingolweni, KwaXolo and kwaNzimakwe.

The statement read: Ugu Municipality notifies all consumers of the Umthamvuna Water Supply System regarding non-compliance with  South African National Standard (SANS) 241: 2015 for treated water within this network.

SANS 241 is a drinking water specification that states the minimum requirements for potable water to be considered safe for human consumption.

Precautionary measures before drinking tap water:

  1. Boil water (one minute minimum) before consumption, cooking, food preparation, oral hygiene or produce washing.
  2. Utilise bottled or alternative safe water.
  3. Refrain from tap water consumption.
