Biker killed in Uvongo crash

Crash numbers soar on South Coast roads.

Much-loved biker Paul Vermeire from Manaba died in a collision on Monday evening last week.

According to a police statement, Margate police responded to an accident scene on the corner of Bond and Marine Drive in Uvongo at 22:00, where they found a man (28), who was riding a motorbike, dead.

“Two men in a charcoal-coloured VW6 were taken to hospital with injuries. Investigations into a case of culpable homicide will determine the exact cause of the accident,” said Saps Ugu District Communications office.

Vermeire, fondly known as ‘Socks’ – as he never wore matching socks – was a passionate biker who never owned a car until recently. He was also a member of the Ghost Riders Motorcycling Club.

He was loved and cherished by the biking fraternity, which he had been involved in for more than a decade.

Vermeire’s close friend, Eben van der Merwe, said he was devastated by his unexpected death.

“Paul was a likeable, well-known person who cheered everyone up and who was always willing to help anyone. I have not only lost a friend and colleague but a brother,” he said.

This tragic accident comes on the back of a string of collisions last weekend.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality was contacted for feedback regarding their festive season road safety plans, but none was received at the time of going to press.
