Thrilling racing warms up Dezzi Raceway
Round six of the KZN Road Racing Club Super Sprint Series takes place at Dezzi Raceway on September 5.
Round five of the KZN Road Racing Club Super Sprint Series took place at Dezzi Raceway in Oslo Beach last Saturday.
On four wheels, the PSA Modifieds, Super GT’s, and Lotus Challenge kept the fans enthralled. The day was capped off by the Backdraft Racing one-hour endurance race. Production, historic, Formula Extreme and Super Motard motorcycle classes also tested the 2.4km circuit.
The cold weather made track conditions a little sketchy to start, with a few incidents and accidents impacting practice time for competitors. Once rubber had been laid down, track times got quicker, and racing became intense.
Local racer Marnitz Coetzer from Margate lined up in his 2L VW Golf Mk 1 in the PSA Modifieds. It was a steep learning curve for Coetzer as he only bought the car the day before and was competing in this class for the first time!
He managed a respectable fourth place finish in Class D, completing 18 racing laps and learning a lot about his new ride.
“Racing is a dream come true,” he admitted. “Having the support of friends, family and KZNRRC made race day a truly exceptional experience.”
While he was satisfied with fourth place, Coetzer insisted he’d be back for more.
“Luckily no issues with the car and the day went well. I hope this experience helps in my quest for a coveted podium spot next time,” he admitted.
Nicole Lombard headed Class A of the PSA Modifieds, beating Pierre-Richard Potgieter into second place by 13.8 seconds. Brett Prece took Class B, Richard Loynes Class C, and Charmaine Petzer led Class D.
In a competitive one-hour endurance race, Jordan Edwards took the chequered flag in his Class A entry. Steve Clark edged out Mike McLoughlin in Class B by under two seconds.
In the Dunlop Lotus Challenge, Rudi Barnard claimed line honours with Mackie Adlem second and JP Nortje in third. Jordan Edwards edged out Steve Clark in Super GT ‘A’ while Mike McLoughlin claimed the spoils in Class B. Craig Hamilton beat Rob Prece in Class C.
On two wheels, Riley Day triumphed in the 150s while Drew Gates won the Super Production Class and the Super Motards. Florian Kroeber was fastest in the Sub 500s while Lee Singh claimed the Formula Extreme spoils.
A couple of lucky fans even got the chance to experience a ‘hot lap’ in one of the Backdraft race cars.
