RNM STRIKE: DA calls for immediate suspension of municipal manager

The DA will be sending an urgent request for intervention to the office of the Cogta MEC Rev Thulasizwe Buthelezi.

All councillors were called to a special council meeting at Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) earlier today.

The KZN South Coast is currently facing a full blown strike by municipal workers over unpaid backdated salaries they claim they are owed.

The result is that towns and suburbs are in a state of litter-strewn disarray.

This statement below was issued on behalf of the Democratic Alliance (DA) caucus in RNM a short while ago.

The DA said its councillors were the only one to make meaningful and angry inputs at the meeting.

“The failure to deliver service and have a credible backup plan was placed firmly at the feet of the municipal manager (Khetha Zulu) and the administration of the municipality,” the statement read.

The DA councillors demanded that an emergency contingency plan be tabled and that RNM seeks an urgent court interdict against the striking workers.

Mayor Zodwa Mzindle.

The DA caucus said the failure of the municipality to deliver services is as a direct result of poor management and poor leadership and this can only be levelled at the mayor Zodwa Mzindle and municipal manager Zulu.

The DA will be sending an urgent request for intervention to the office of the Cogta MEC Rev Thulasizwe Buthelezi.

“We will be calling for the immediate suspension of Zulu and for the MEC’s intervention to end the strike. The DA councillors will remain at the forefront of trying to find a solution and holding those responsible to account,” the statement read.
