Tweni needs more crime patrollers

The patrollers do an incredible job in Tweni, but more volunteers are needed to step up and sign up for a weekly shift.

Dedicated patrollers who volunteer for the Umtentweni Community Police Forum are the ‘eyes and ears’ for Saps and Law Enforcement.

They work seven-day shifts and respond to incidents reported by the community. However, more volunteers are needed to sign up for shifts.

The diligent work of these patrollers has resulted in the arrest of suspects responsible for multiple crimes in the Tweni area, and since they began patrolling at night, there has been a significant drop in crime.

The forum’s chairperson, Beyers Le Roux, said crime is currently low in Tweni, with an average of four cases being opened a month, but there has been an increase in suspicious activity in the area as the festive season approaches.

Le Roux said the members respond to reports of suspicious-looking persons and vehicles, and suspects have been found to be in possession of tools used in burglaries, drugs and stolen property.

“Patrollers have also found stolen property hidden in the bush while searching for suspects, assisted in medical emergencies, and helped at accident scenes,” he said.
