The recent sweltering days mean it’s a busy time for a snake catcher!

The South Coast’s snake catcher, Sarel van der Merwe of Shelly Beach, has had his hands full with snakes – in all the weirdest places!

Last Saturday, he caught a green mamba in a tree at a home in Albersville, Port Shepstone.

On December 30, he nabbed another green mamba in a geyser box at a holiday resort in Sea Park.

Then, Sarel and his partner, Emma-Jane Cox, travelled to a chicken farm in Izotsha to catch a green mamba ‘hanging out’ in the rafters of the farm’s compound.

A ‘high catch’ for Sarel van der Merwe at the chicken farm.

In a separate incident, he received a call for help from a resident who had spotted a black mamba in a storeroom of a house.

It was Sarel to the rescue as he drove 58km to Mahlabathini, Oribi.

At first, it was a ‘game of hide-and-seek’.

“After a while, I moved a couch, and I heard a hissing sound, and that’s when I knew that I would find the black mamba inside the couch,” said Sarel.

As usual, Sarel’s intuition was spot on, and he safely caught the snake inside the couch.

He waved goodbye to a relieved family and travelled another 58km back home.
