Heavy rain causes flooding in Port Edward [SEE PICS]

The South African Weather Service has issued a Level 5 warning.

Areas such as Port Edward and Mpenjati have endured heavy rainfall and severe flooding in places.

This comes after weather warnings predicting heavy rains for today (February 19) through to tomorrow (February 20). The expected rainfall is between 125mm to 300mm.

By midday, pictures of the popular The Pont Holiday Resort in Port Edward being flooded have circulated on social media platforms.

Some of the rainfall readings recorded so far in areas along the South Coast: 

  • Leisure Bay: Average of 42mm since 07:00 this morning (Wednesday).
  • Harding: 100mm in Harding last night (Tuesday).
  • Port Edward: 60/70mm recorded this morning (Wednesday), and still counting.
Flooding at The Riverside venue situated on the Umtamvuna River.

The South African Weather Service has issued a Level 5 warning for today (February 19) and tomorrow (February 20).

It released the following statement: “Widespread showers and thundershowers are expected over north-western parts of KZN today (February 19) and over most parts of KZN tomorrow (February 20). Significant rainfall amounts of up to 100mm are expected in places over the northern parts, as well as, along the coast and adjacent interior of KZN tomorrow (February 20) which may lead to flooding, as well as significant impacts. The flooding may extend up until Thursday morning in places.”

The rain is expected to lead to the flooding of roads, bridges and settlements (formal and informal); damage to mud-built houses; disruption to essential services (water, electricity and communication); danger to life (fast-flowing streams/ deep waters); and major disruption of traffic flow due to major roads being flooded.
