TRIBUTE: Rev. Boet van Schalkwyk will be missed

He was described as ‘an older brother in Christ, a mentor and a friend.

The death of Reverend Boet van Schalkwyk (77) in a car accident on the N2 near Umzumbe on February 27 has shocked his family, friends and colleagues.

He served as Interim Moderator at Southbroom Church and also preached at Alfred County Congregation, Port Shepstone, on a regular basis.

Van Schalkwyk also served at Sailors Society International as Pastoral Chaplain and Crisis Response Network Coordinator for Africa and the Middle East. This involved, among other things, care for the spiritual and emotional well-being and practical needs of sailors at sea, repatriation of stranded crew, trauma counselling, and medical intervention in times of crisis.

A colleague, Reverend Jeremy Smith, paid tribute to Van Schalkwyk as ‘an older brother in Christ, a mentor and a friend’.

“His zeal, wisdom and sincerity will be sorely missed. Prior to his work at the Sailors Society, he served as minister to St John’s Middelburg, Cambridge Presbyterian Church, East London and Saints Presbyterian Church, Centurion.”

He resided in the Presbyterian Retirement Cottages in Raspberry Lane, Umtentwini.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Linda, sons Stephen, Daniel and Brandon, and daughter Tara-Ann, their spouses and grandchildren.
