Mzimkhulu River bridge closure: Petition calls for waiver of N2 toll fees at Port Shepstone ramps

Umtentweni residents are appealing to the authorities to waive toll fees at the N2 offramps at Port Shepstone (Marburg) as the Mzimkhulu River bridge is closed for repairs.

Many families and employers are facing hardships due to the extra financial strain to pay these toll fees, on top of having to endure a longer and inconvenient commute.

“It is important to note that the Mzimkhulu bridge is a lifeline for our community, serving more than 10,000 vehicles per day (South African Department for Transport, 2018). Due to its closure for repairs, we are compelled to use the toll roads, which adds significant cost to our daily expenses,” said petition starter Pat de Korte.

“A waiver during this period would greatly benefit us, reducing the financial burden during a time when our cost of living and commuting has significantly increased due to the re-routing. We understand the necessity for the repair works for the safety and convenience of all road users. However, residents should not have to shoulder this extra inconvenience and cost as a result.”

“We kindly ask the relevant authorities to consider waiving the toll fees during the repair period. We urge you to sign this petition in support of this waiver for the residents of Tweni. Your signature can help make a difference,” she said.
