Andhra Sabha celebrates 70th year in grand style

The event was a fitting tribute to the past, present, and future of the Andhra community in Port Shepstone.

The Port Shepstone and District Andhra Sabha marked Ugadi (Telugu New Year) and its 70th anniversary with a grand celebration last Sunday.

This special event held at the Andhra Sabha Hall was buzzing with excitement and cultural pride, which saw over 250 guests in attendance. It was a true reflection of the enduring spirit and unity of the Andhra community in Port Shepstone.

The guest of honour, the Consul General of India, Dr Thelma John David, unveiled a Roll of Honour Board, recognising the pioneering families whose contributions were instrumental in the establishment of the hall.

The unveiling of the board was a tribute to those early visionaries whose hard work and dedication laid the foundation for the hall, a place that has since become the heart of the community.

After an introduction of the Consul General by ex-KwaZulu-Natal MEC, Ravi Pillay, David, in her keynote address, spoke about the strong ties between India and the Indian diaspora in South Africa, which she said must be strengthened with educational and cultural exchanges.

The event’s dynamic programme director, Pravashnie Rajagopal, ensured that every moment was packed with excitement.

Senior Andhra member Reuben ‘DD’ Naidoo traced the impressive history of the establishment from 1955 and paid tribute to the founding families after the Honours Board was unveiled and read.

Guests were treated to a variety of entertainment, including dance performances and engaging sketches. The crowd’s spirits were lifted by the performances, showcasing the deep cultural roots of the Andhra community.

One of the standout performances came from the Andhra ladies’ group, whose traditional dance was a visual delight. Dressed in colourful and intricate attire, the ladies performed a graceful and energetic routine that captivated the audience, showcasing the vibrant folk traditions of Andhra Pradesh. The performance was a highlight, leaving the audience with a sense of pride in their cultural heritage.

The grand finale of the evening was nothing short of spectacular. A teen brother and sister duet, Dreshian and Drushantha Govender took to the stage and delivered an enthralling performance that seamlessly blended traditional and modern dance styles.
