OPINION: Nearly a century of Cominos history comes to a close

The family name has been synonymous with Margate in many ways in the past.

Our family has sold St George’s Court, a transaction which brings to an end the business presence of the Cominos family in Margate of close to 100 years.

My grandfather George, after whom the building was named, and my grandmother Florence opened the Beach Tea Room in the 1930s on the site where the Wimpy now stands on Margate Beach.

After his death in 1958, my father Dennis and my uncle Peter took over the business at a time when Margate was reeling from the shock of the first shark attack.

As some may remember, both my grandfather and father were both mayors of Margate. In their time, they were heavily involved in the community and, with their wives, did much wonderful and good work.

I now live in Westville; my sister Anne Logan lives in Tinley Manor on the North Coast.

Editor’s note: It’s is a sad day, but the Cominos name will live on as a street name, at the very least.
