The Ethekwini Municipality has informed its residents of a planned water interruption from various reservoirs supplied by the uMngeni-uThukela Wiggins Water Treatment Works gravity system.

The shutdown is for the municipality’s bulk water supplier, uMngeni-uThukela Water (UUW) to replace 1200mm diameter seals and check meters on the gravity bulk pipeline.

The shutdown will take place on Tuesday morning, April 8 until Wednesday, April 9 and affects Umkhomazi and Craigieburn down south.

In preparation for the shutdown, UUW will commence by draining out the reservoir networks and open the scour once all reservoirs have reached a low level.

What happens during the shutdown period?

• There will be no water flowing into the municipality’s reservoirs.

• In addition, the outlets of the municipality reservoirs will also be closed during the shutdown period. This is to reduce reservoirs’ recovery time.

Residents urged to use water sparingly

Residents who may be receiving water during this period are urged to reduce consumption and to use water sparingly.

The recovery process of the municipal reservoirs could take up to two weeks after the completion of the shutdown, with some reservoirs recovering sooner than others.

eThekwini Municipality said in a statement, “Our teams will be closely monitoring the system to ensure the full restoration of water supply. Water tankers will be deployed to affected areas where necessary.”
