Low level bridge is safe to drive on despite rain

However, the bridge to Mvutshini on the P520 Oatlands is flooded and vehicles cannot cross.

Earlier this morning there were some concerns that the low level bridge at Batstone’s Drift was flooded.

According to authorities from Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, the low level bridge is fine. It was reported that water had been flowing towards the road where the bridge intersects with the road, but it was usable.

This morning (Sunday) Lazer 911 Security reported that the motorists were using the bridge and all was good.

The P464 (Sugar Mill Road leading to the low level bridge.

The P464 (Sugar Mill road) has deteriorated substantially in the last week due to increased traffic.

“This road cannot cope with the high level of traffic. Many sections on the river side of the road have become undermined and potholes are developing. The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport (DOT) needs to examine this road again. I’m sure if they are honest, they will realise it is irresponsible to continue to allow high levels of traffic on the road. The department has to make an urgent decision on opening the toll before lives are lost,” said an Umtentweni resident.

Meanwhile, the bridge to Mvutshini on the P520 Oatlands is flooded and vehicles cannot cross. Law Enforcement has put up barrier tape to stop traffic going through.

Motorists are advised to be alert as weather reports still predict light rain over the province for the rest of the day.
