Umkomaas station commander to bow out soon
Colonel Mbongeni Isaiah Mngadi recently accepted the Police Station of the Year award.
Umkomaas Saps’ station commander, Colonel Mbongeni Isaiah Mngadi, will be retiring at the end of June.
Before bowing out, he had the honour of accepting the Police Station of the Year award (best station in KZN) at the Saps Provincial Excellence Awards last week.
He joined Saps in 1987, where he successfully completed his basic training and graduated with a National Diploma in Policing in 1991.
In 1992, he was promoted to Sergeant and continued excelling, and a year later was promoted to Warrant Officer in the Saps VIP Protection Unit.
After the dawn of democracy, he was transferred to Durban Central Station to the Saps Durban Flying Squad.
In 1996, he was promoted to Captain (Commissioned Officer) and transferred to KwaMakhutha Saps as the Support Services Commander for four years. Thereafter, in 2002 he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and was stationed at the Durban Flying Squad as the Human Resources Management Commander and also served as the Durban K9 Unit Commander.
In 2005, he was promoted to Colonel at the KZN Provincial head office as the Vispol Provincial Commander, managing 183 stations in KZN in terms of Visible Policing for five years.
At the time, his aim was to prepare for the 2010 Soccer World Cup which was being hosted in the country. Later, he was transferred to the post of Greenwood Park station commander because he desired a new challenge.
In 2020, he requested to be transferred to Berea Saps to gain further expertise as an emerging leader, and in 2023 Mngadi was posted to Umkomaas Saps.
Also, he has a B Tech Degree in Policing and Diploma in Human Resource Management, and attended numerous leadership and management courses over the years.
Mngadi has held the rank of Colonel for 20 years and served as a Commissioned Officer for 28 years.
He earned six medals for dedicated and loyal service and many other accolades for operationally managing visible policing, crime prevention, crime detection and support services.
“His passion for justice is unmatched and he continues to strive for excellence,” said Umkomaas Saps spokesperson, Captain Ranjith Rampersad.
“Colonel Mngadi is a true mentor who will be remembered by his peers as a strong believer in participative management and good harmonious labour relations in the Saps which are admirable.”
As his journey comes to an end this month, his colleagues thank him for enhancing policing and fostering partnership policing with the Community Police Forum.
“As a dedicated and committed cop, he will leave behind an indelible imprint in the Saps family,” added Rampersad.
The eThekwini District Commissioner, Major General Makhosazana Victoria Kheswa, also wishes Mngadi a blessed and fruitful retirement.
