Vandals damage bridge on Saints Walk between St Mike’s and Uvongo Beach

This is not the first incident of its kind.

Vandals have once again struck at the popular Saints Walk pathway, this time damaging one of the bridges to the point where it has become unsafe for public use.

Saints Walk stretches from St Michael on Sea all the way through to Uvongo Beach. It’s an important community asset and forms part of the Uvongo parkrun route, which attracts around 200 runners and walkers each week, including visitors from outside the area. It is also a favourite spot for tourists, dog walkers, and fitness enthusiasts.

This is not the first incident.
Over time, bridges and signage along the scenic route have been repeatedly targeted, despite the significant time, effort, and funding that community groups invest in maintaining the walkway.

The pathway is regularly cared for by Tidy Towns Shelly to Margate, Ivungu River Conservancy, Margate Round Table, and parkrun volunteers.

“We urge regular walkers, runners, and residents to be vigilant and help us put an end to this vandalism. As it is a popular tourist attraction, it’s a valuable asset to our town,” said Judi Davis of the conservancy.

Davis added that the planks were smashed on Sunday, but quickly replaced on Monday last week, with the help of Ronnie Mhlantlalala and Lawrence Gumede from Tidy Towns.

Ronnie Mhlantlalala and Lawrence Gumede from Tidy Towns helped to replace the planks.
