Southport residents demand urgent action for crumbling road

Beach Road leads to a Blue Flag beach and its poor condition leaves a bad impression on visitors.

Residents of Beach Road in Southport are pleading with Ray Nkonyeni Municipality to urgently resurface the deteriorating road.

Catrini Pretorius said the community has faced repeated empty promises from the municipality despite paying high rates for services.

“The road is a safety risk. When it rains, residents get stuck and it’s impossible to get in or out of the area. The security company can’t patrol our road properly and it’s a nightmare to get an ambulance during an emergency,” said Pretorius.

She added that the road leads to the Southport Blue Flag beach and said its poor condition leaves a bad impression on visitors trying to reach the area.

Pretorius urged the municipality to intervene without delay to ensure the road is made safe and accessible again.

The Herald has been inundated with complaints from frustrated residents in the northern suburbs, including Tweni, Sea Park, Southport and Melville, where roads have become almost undrivable. In one case, a resident living on Riverside Road in Melville reported that she has a car, but the road is so bad that she has to use a taxi to get to work.

Most recently, Ward 16’s crumbling roads came under review when Mzo Jali from Ray Nkonyeni Municipality and Ward 16 councillor John Williams toured through the residential area to assess the state of several badly damaged roads.

The inspection covered roads such as Russell Mellick Road in Tweni to Bigfisherman Road in Pumula, as well as Vale Road in Sea Park and Beach Road in Southport.

Williams said he would inform residents as soon as feedback is received from the municipality.
