Water woes irk Margate ratepayer

In spite of calls and emails to Ugu District Municipality, the problem persists.

Yamkela Nduzulwana and her neighbours in Extension 3 in Margate are frustrated about ongoing water disruptions.

Nduzulwana says the inconsistent water supply in a few streets in Ward 6 has persisted for years.

In spite of numerous calls and emails from residents to Ugu District Municipality, no response has been forthcoming.

“I think what is more frustrating is that we do not get any communication from the municipality. In a month, we sometimes go more than 20 days without water.”

She says that for a water tanker to be sent to the suburb, they have to scream and shout on the phone to Ugu.

Nduzulwana says it’s not the whole ward, but only several streets which are without water regularly.

“We sometimes hear people saying they don’t have water, but when they call Ugu and report it they get help, but not us.”

She recently wrote a letter to the municipality saying that these disruptions have affected their daily lives, health, hygiene, and damage to geysers and washing machines.

“We are facing expenses which we have had to bear without any compensation or support from the municipality.”

She says they demand a clear and time-bound action plan outlining the measures the municipality will take to ensure a stable and sustainable water supply.

Also, a commitment to regular public communication, including early notice of disruptions and the deployment of water tankers when needed.

Comment was sought from Ugu, but none was received at the time of going to press.
