Umzumbe’s civil engineer, Dr Thuli Mwelase, has recently been appointed as Ugu District Municipality’s head of water and sanitation services.
Ugu said the filling of this post was a strategic effort to enhance water and sanitation services.
The municipality said Mwelase was recommended to the council and subsequently approved by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC following a rigorous and legislated selection process.
“With a distinguished career and a proven track record within Ugu municipal management, she brings an exceptional level of expertise and a wealth of experience in water services management,” said Ugu.
Ugu mayor Sikhumbuzo Mqadi, said Mwelase will be entrusted with the oversight of water resources management, the delivery of clean water, and the maintenance of sanitation services throughout the district.
“We are fully supportive of her appointment. Her profound expertise and visionary approach to sustainable water management will be invaluable as we strive to enhance our infrastructure and better serve our community,” he said.
Meanwhile, the newly-appointed water and sanitation services head expressed her enthusiasm for the role, underscoring a commitment to transparency and community engagement.
“I eagerly anticipate collaborating with residents, stakeholders, and the dedicated team at Ugu to address our water and sanitation challenges. Together, we will implement innovative solutions that ensure access to safe and reliable services for all,” she said,
Mqadi said Mwelase’s appointment arrived at a pivotal moment as the municipality contends with increasing water demands due to population growth and climate change challenges.
