Children’s book is a tool for parents
This is the first book the young author has written and illustrated herself.
Writer and illustrator Jennifer Carroll (29) from Winklespruit, paid Pennington a visit on Sunday for an author meet and greet event for her book – Sleepover at Grandma.
She explained that this is a special book because it’s rooted in real memories from her own childhood.
“When I was little, I really struggled to fall asleep. I’d lie awake, restless and wide-eyed, but my gran always knew what to do,” she said.
“She had this beautiful, calming way of helping me drift off; through soft stories, soothing sounds and the warm, safe feeling of being loved.”
Now years later, she’s seen similar struggles in her son Gabriel who has ADHD.
“It was in those late-night moments with him that I found myself remembering my gran’s gentle methods, and I realised just how powerful they truly were. That’s what inspired me to write Sleepover at Grandma. It’s not just a story, it’s a tool for parents who find peace at the end of a long day.”
The author enjoyed sharing this story with Pennington locals and was grateful for the support and friendly faces.
This is the first book the young author has written and illustrated herself, but she has previously illustrated for other authors.

She created all the artwork for a poetry book by Rebecca Golan, and illustrated another children’s book that’s set to launch at the end of August.
In addition to illustration, she also designs book covers and offers formatting services to help authors bring their stories to life.
Jennifer is a graphic designer as well.
In terms of her writing, she said that publishing her story has been empowering.
“Aspiring authors, remember when writing it is your book, not the publisher’s – and that makes a big difference,” she said.
“When you show up at a market or event and talk to people as the author, there’s something special about that connection. People love meeting the face behind the story, and it often leads to more sales and heartfelt conversations.”
Carroll mentioned that there are more exciting projects on the way for her and her readers, including a seven-book series featuring animals from different parts of the world.
