Do 27 minutes of good on Mandela Day

July is a wonderful time to gather as a group and join a cause, or simply do your individual bit – whether it’s 27 minutes, hours, or even days.

It’s Mandela Day today and a call is being made to all good South Africans to rally behind the 27 minutes programme to help those in need.

People are encouraged to connect and uplift others – 27 minutes can make a difference. July is seen as a perfect time to reconnect, reflect and radiate good energy to support others as it’s Mandela Month. It is celebrated worldwide as Mandela became an international icon for his love for peace and democracy.

Lizwi Zangwa from Boboyi said he remembers Mandela as a statesman who loved people’s democracy or welfare and sports. “As we we are in Mandela Month, we’re reminded to make an impact, just 27 minutes of service to others for a statesman who unified all people in South Africa and abroad. We need to hold hands together and look forward to a future full of hope, pride and great possibilities,” said Zangwa.

He urged all to reach out by helping, growing, supporting and encouraging those most in need. “July is a wonderful time to gather as a group and join a cause, or simply do your individual bit – whether it’s 27 minutes, hours, or even days – to be of service and make a difference to others. This not only helps others, but benefits you too. As the saying goes: it’s more blessed to give than to receive. Giving reminds us that we do have something to offer. It activates gratitude, invites empathy, and allows for self-reflection.”

Dr Nelson Rholihlahla Mandela was the first president of a democratic South Africa ushered in 1994 after the downfall of the apartheid government. Mandela was born on July 18, 1918 and died on December 5, 2013, at the age of 95.

Mandela was detained at Robben Island for 27 years, after he became the president, he served those in need and urged all people to take 27 minutes of their precious time and dedicate it to serving the poor on his birthday.

Mandela wanted people to help others in celebration of his special day and to remember that his time in jail was for a better life for all.
