Tweni Whale Deck: A hidden gem for nature lovers

Catch breathtaking views of migrating whales and stunning sunsets at the Tweni Whale Deck – a community-built gem by the Umtentweni Conservancy. Bring your braai, your binoculars and enjoy nature at its best!

Perched along the picturesque coastline of Umtentweni, the Tweni Whale Deck has become a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike to soak up ocean views, enjoy a sunset braai, and watch the annual whale migration up close.

This scenic wooden deck was built by a dedicated group of nature lovers from the Umtentweni Conservancy, led by long-time conservation champion Alex Skene. Years ago, the conservancy dreamed of creating a safe, accessible space where the community could connect with nature and appreciate the rich marine life along the South Coast.

Today, that vision is a reality and every winter and spring, the Tweni Whale Deck offers one of the best land-based vantage points for spotting majestic humpback and southern right whales as they make their way north to calve in warmer waters. Dolphins and seabirds often put on a show too, much to the delight of families and photographers.

But the deck isn’t just for whale watching. It’s become a popular gathering place for friends and families to share a braai or picnic while taking in sweeping ocean views. Sunsets here are breath taking, with the golden glow sinking into the sea as the waves roll in below.

Thanks to Umtentweni Conservancy’s passion for preserving natural spaces, this little coastal gem continues to bring people together and inspire an appreciation for the wonders of the South Coast.
