Wellness event to focus on diabetes

This event is free of charge.

Diabetes activists and local businesses are uniting to help communities understand the disease better, and how to support those living with it.

An informative event, in collaboration with Discovery Health and Scottburgh Family Clinic, will be held at Bloom Health & Beauty Spa at Umdoni Point, Pennington on Saturday, July 26 from 10:00 to 12:00.

The event is free of charge and all are welcome.

Guest speakers will offer insight into the daily lives of those with diabetes and discuss how everyone can play a role in supporting them. Attendees will be provided with valuable resources, information and community connections that can help improve the lives of individuals managing diabetes.

“We encourage everyone – whether you have diabetes, know someone who does, or simply want to learn more to attend this important event. Together, we can foster understanding and compassion within our community,” said Shay Preston, diabetes activist.

Other speakers include registered nurse Monicke Venter and diabetes activist Siyabonga Kwanele Zuma.

Diabetes is a complex condition that comes in two primary forms: Type 1 and Type 2. Despite sharing common symptoms, the two types differ significantly in their onset, management, and the individuals they typically affect.

Type 1 is an autoimmune disorder with no known cure, requiring lifelong insulin therapy. In contrast, Type 2 can often be managed through lifestyle changes, medication, and in some cases, insulin therapy.

Common symptoms of both types are: increased thirst, frequent urination, extreme fatigue, blurred vision, slow-healing wounds or cuts, unexplained weight loss, and increased hunger.

“Let’s come together to support our community and make a positive impact in the lives of those living with diabetes,” added Preston.

Free testing will be available as well. To register, contact 082 3919248.
