Brigadier Slabbert bids farewell after 37 years
Brigadier William John Slabbert was a leader who made a lasting difference in every community he served.
Respected for his vision, integrity and dedication, Brigadier William John Slabbert leaves behind a legacy of excellence as he retires from the Saps after nearly four decades of service.
Slabbert was bid farewell at the end of June, marking the end of an impressive 37-year career. Enlisting in 1987, Slabbert quickly proved he was destined for leadership.
He began as a constable in Durban North and Parkview before taking up a lieutenant post with Saps Ezinqoleni detectives and later moving on to Saps Harding.
As Vispol commander at Saps Port Shepstone, he introduced innovative strategies to reduce crime and made a lasting difference at every station he commanded. After a short stint in Kokstad, he took up the role of station commander at Saps Margate, bringing his vision for effective policing closer to home.
Under his leadership, Saps Margate earned numerous accolades, including KZN Provincial Excellence Awards Station of the Year for 2017/2018 and 2018/2019, Senior Manager of the Year in 2018/2019, National Excellence Awards Station of the Year in 2019, and second runner-up in the KZN Provincial Excellence Awards for 2025/2026.
Beyond his policing expertise and love for chess, Slabbert built strong relationships with local businesses and the community, helping make Margate a safe and popular holiday destination.
Ugu District Commissioner, Major General Sethenya Nxamagele, thanked him for his loyal service and wished him a well-deserved and blessed retirement, adding that he leaves behind a true legacy of good policing.
