Umkomaas police celebrate Mandela Day
Children received treats and were motivated to become disciplined, future leaders.
Umkomaas Saps members celebrated Mandela Day last week, with the children from District 49 Child and Youth Care Centre.
The children received various treats, and members of the station sponsored 67 grocery items (coordinated by Captain Roselyn Thevan) which were handed over to the social worker and staff at the centre.
Officers also spent 67 minutes serving and making a positive impact at the centre.
The initiative was carried out as part of the Umkomaas Saps’ social crime prevention project, and it was hailed a success.
A praise and worship session was conducted by Sandi Madlala and a prayer was led by Sergeant Musa Ninela, the social crime prevention coordinator.
Captain Cheryl Ellis, the keynote speaker and Umzinto K9 unit commander, motivated the children to be disciplined at all times, educate themselves and become great future leaders in the community.
She also emphasised the importance of children knowing and understanding the police emergency number – 10111 – and making use of it in times of need.
Ellis reiterated the theme for the year which is ‘it’s still in our hands to combat poverty and promote social justice’.
Commenting on the Mandela Day celebration, Umkomaas Saps spokesperson Captain Ranjith Rampersad said that it was an occasion for everyone to take action and inspire change.
“As a station we have embarked on a principle of inclusion of all officers in our charity drive which proved to be a raving success,” he said.
The youngsters from District 49 thanked the officers for their visit, and the station’s acting station commander Lieutenant Colonel John Mthobise Ngema said that he was proud of members for assisting the children.
