Despite the current water woes in Umdoni, there is still some hope left in terms of protecting resources.

The Amanzi Champions, a team of dedicated water and environmental ambassadors, are being contracted by uMngeni-uThukela Water to protect and preserve water resources.

These champions can be identified by their signature blue shirts and hats, equipped and ready to tackle local water challenges.

The team recently worked in the mid-South Coast area, focusing on Umzinto and actively addressing water security threats and encouraging community-led water stewardship.

They assisted with solid waste collection, clearing of invasive alien plants, installation of litter booms in the Umzimayi River (made from 2-l bottles and rope, erecting anti-littering signage, door-to-door awareness campaigns in the CBD, drain clearing in Sanathan and near the clinic, sewer line access clearing, sewer and water monitoring and reporting.

The team is also hands on with ongoing engagement with the Umdoni municipality and the Ugu district water and sanitation department.

The champions work on litter booms to stop pollution in the Umzimayi River.
