Celebrating women: Top Pennington chef is an inspiration
Family remains central to her life as she balances her career with motherhood.
Award-winning chef Kayla-Ann Osborn is one of the many inspiring women on the South Coast.
Known for her innovative approach and dedication to excellence, the Pennington resident has consistently redefined what it means to be a chef in today’s culinary landscape.
She balances her role as a successful restauranteur with the joys and challenges of motherhood. From her humble beginnings on the South Coast, she has returned to her roots, where she now owns and heads three restaurants.
Born in Nelspruit and raised on a banana farm on the South Coast, Osborn’s passion for food took root at an early age.
Her culinary journey began with her grandmother who instilled in her a love for traditional dishes, including a treasured spaghetti Bolognese recipe that remains a source of inspiration.
After completing high school in 2010, she enrolled at the prestigious 1000 Hills Chef School.
From 2012-2013, she started her career as a junior chef at the Selborne Hotel; from 2013-2016 she transitioned to fine dining as head chef at Traffords restaurant in Pietermaritzburg; from 2016-2018 she was given the opportunity to set up and lead The Chef’s Table in Umhlanga (which later earned the title of the 15th best restaurant in South Africa); from 2019-2020 she gained experience working with renowned chef Clare Smyth in London and from 2020-2022 she worked as head chef for Delaire Graff in Cape Town.
In 2022, Osborn embraced the challenges of being a single mother while expanding on her culinary journey. And in 2023, she opened her first restaurant.
The top chef is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of chefs, and launched a culinary school last year.
Family remains central to her life as she balances her career with motherhood, often involving her children in her culinary journey.
From a young girl with a passion for cooking to a celebrated chef and entrepreneur, Osborn’s journey is a testament to hard work, resilience and love for the culinary arts.
Her journey is a source of inspiration and empowerment for women, proving that with determination and passion, boundaries can be broken and dreams can become reality.
