Margate Cemetery in a shocking state
The place is disgusting, unsafe and a no-go area for children.
Margate Cemetery has become an eyesore, with piles of rubbish, people using it as a toilet and illegal electricity cables on the site.
Used toilet paper, unwanted appliances and live cables on the ground have stopped people from visiting their loved ones.

Ray Williams of Ramsgate said when he visits his late father’s grave, he cannot spend much time there because of the state of the place.
Also, he said while walking to his father’s grave, he has to be careful of where and how he steps not only because of the cables, but also human excreta.
“It’s sad coming here, many of our loved ones are resting here. We come here sometimes to clean and to remember, but we find the cemetery in this terrible state. It’s disrespect and injustice, the dead deserve our respect and not our rubbish.”
Williams said he hopes that the relevant authorities look into it and fix it as soon as possible because it’s unacceptable.
He added that he likes to think that a cemetery is a sanctuary, but he is sad, disappointed, frustrated and angry.
Ray Nkonyeni Municipality spokesperson Simon April said that there has been challenges of overgrowth, vandalism and issues of illegal electricity connections.
“The last time our employees undertook grass and verge cutting, they were shocked by illegal power lines. They have since requested assistance from our electricity team.”
He added that it is difficult to maintain the cemetery regularly because of the cables.
