Contract extensions peeve Ray Nkonyeni Municipality councillors
At a recent council meeting, several councillors wanted to to know how long it takes to advertise and appoint a new contractor.
Ray Nkonyeni Municipality councillors are unhappy that contracts of service providers are being extended, and that this trend takes away opportunities from others to tender.
Yet again, at a meeting at council chambers last Tuesday, a request to extend a contract for verge cutting was put forward.
Councillors were unhappy about the request and expressed that they do not like the extension of contracts. They said before a contract expires, the process to find a new one should be done in time.
Several councillors wanted to to know how long it takes to advertise and appoint a contractor, so that extensions can stop and new contracts awarded when needed.
DA councillor Leon Garbade said the contract (verge cutting) was extended three times and suggested that the request be rejected and allow the municipal manager Khetha Zulu to find a new contract.
Zulu explained that if council does not approve the extension, there will be no verge cutting and that means the municipality will have to be accountable to the legislature as to why this service is not being given to the people.
Another councillor, Stephanie Breedt said that in most areas verges are not cut, so people would not even notice.
Breedt said that the municipal manager should have explained this the first time after council was asked to extend the contract.
Clr Mosley Lubanyane said that this shows that someone is not doing his job because resolutions taken in council are not taken seriously.
The speaker, Phumlani Gumbi, suggested to the municipal manager that he deal with this issue because council as a whole is unhappy.
