New drop off point for Tops and Tagz project in Scottburgh
Through the recycling of bread tags, plastic bottle tops, aluminium can tabs and coffee cup lids, they transform ordinary waste into life-changing mobility for those in need.
Scottburgh Mall now serves as a dedicated drop-off point for the Bread Tags for Wheelchairs project.
The Sweethearts Foundation believes that every South African deserves the independence a wheelchair provides.
Through the recycling of bread tags, plastic bottle tops, aluminium can tabs and coffee cup lids, they transform ordinary waste into life-changing mobility for those in need.
All approved items can now be delivered to the Scottburgh Mall management office.
Every Thursday, mid-South Coast local Sue Martin and volunteer Reg Turner collect and sort the donations, removing any unsuitable items, which are either discarded or passed along to other recyclers.
Remember:
• Bread tags should be the uniform, flat clips marked with recycling symbol #6 (polystyrene), which are sorted by colour before being sent to recycling partners.
• Only collect bottle tops with resin codes #2 or #5 (these are typically from milk bottles), Coca-Cola, water bottles and drinks like Energade and Pump (excluding the clear cap over the mouthpiece).
• Items not accepted include metal caps, lids or plastic tops without the correct recycling number.
• Aluminium can tops refer to the small pull-tabs from soda or beer cans. Aluminium is highly recyclable and valuable for the initiative. Ensure these tabs are clean before donating.
• Plastic lids from takeaway coffee cups are also accepted, provided they are clean and free of paper residue.
• Keep tags separated from other items, as they go to different partners. Everything should be clean and dry before recycling.
The Sweethearts Foundation also offers a community hours programme, allowing those interested to earn service hours while supporting their mission.
Delivering 250 tops or 250 tags, cleaned and sorted, to the nearest collection point earns you one hour of community service. This is a simple yet impactful way to contribute.
Look out for sorting days on the foundation’s social pages. Participating is another great way to earn hours.
The foundation is always running new projects and welcomes different skills and ideas to enhance their impact.
“Volunteering or helping to establish new collection points can significantly grow the Foundation’s network in Scottburgh and beyond,” said Sue.
“Imagine the possibility of donating a new wheelchair to someone in need, like the person who spends his days by the traffic lights outside Scottburgh Mall.”
