War room aims to resolve Ward 16 issues
Residents met to discuss service delivery in partnership with the local municipality and other organisations.
After months of planning, the Ward 16 committee in Sea Park convened its inaugural war room stakeholders’ and residents’ meeting at the Alfred Evans Hall recently.
Nazir Shaikh, chairperson of the Ward 16 war room under Operation Sakuma Sakhe, expressed joy at the launch of this initiative, stating that it serves as an opportunity to connect, generate innovative ideas and ensure enhanced service delivery in partnership with the local municipality.
Shaikh emphasised the necessity of maintaining a functional ward task team, coordinating service delivery, mobilising resources and assisting in the growth of an integrated development plan.
Elsie Zulu, who heads Operation Sakuma Sakhe at Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, reiterated the importance of stakeholder involvement in addressing service delivery issues. She described the structures at provincial, district and local levels.
Clr John Williams highlighted the inadequacy of the Southport Clinic to cater for a large number of patients, verge cutting, roads in poor condition and the municipality unable to adequately deal with these issues.
He said councillors have little influence over Ugu District Municipality or Eskom. “We hope that this war room will assist in fast tracking service delivery,” he said.
Shaikh noted the neglect from Umtentweni to Hibberedene.
He also pointed out the need for secondary schooling and colleges.
“Furthermore, the absence of recreational facilities, grounds, or parks diminishes the quality of life for residents in this area. These issues must be included in the municipality’s integrated development plan for Ward 16,” said Shaikh.
